Thank you for this post! And all the others... your blog has always been a lovely and helpful read as I teach myself to cook.

I had a question though...I love soba noodles and would totally make them a staple but so far have only found them at pricey organic markets or reasonably priced in Flushing... Do you know of a less expensive/more convenient place to buy them?

Thanks!

Seconding Wendy above. Love that quote. And the level of truth in it would probably stun the majority of Americans.

I am not much of a watcher of TV, but Jamie Oliver nearly got into fisticuffs with a lunch lady in Huntington, WV on a preview of his show last night, trying to convince her of the same thing. She truly believed that the "rehydrated mashed potato pellets" (yes, there should be more quotations in there, around "potato") were better and easier to make than rice and beans. I will just cry now.

And you've just reinforced why my larder is never without beans,(farm) eggs, sesame and olive oil, onions a bunch of something green, a bunch of fresh herbs, garlic, whole wheat or kamut pasta and rice.

"Funny how the cheapest, and quickest food that you make at home is often some of the healthiest around? And how, outside the home kitchen, cheap and fast food tends to be the least? "

So true! I've been thinking that I need to start stocking up on "throw together" things because while I buy groceries for the recipes I intend to make for my blog, on nights when that's just not gonna happen we tend to hit our local Thai takeout.

I love dishes like this where everything is just kind of thrown together and still looks and tastes amazing. The best kind of weeknight meals.
