Hey Cathy, I made the pie this weekend to test out for Fourth of July, in case I screwed it up. It worked out perfectly! And if a chucklehead like me can pull it off, anyone can. (Bonus: Leftover watermelon juice with lemon, Campari and mint turns out to be a pretty decent cocktail.) Thanks for the recipe, love the blog.

The chocolate on top of your pie reminds me of a Southern Italian "watermelon and chocolate pudding" recipe (I forget the Italian name) I've been wanting to attempt.

Congratulations to you both. Funny enough I was one of the girls serving the pies to the hungry crowd. In fact I am in the picture you posted above with the red and blue patterned dress. I didn't get to try any pie that day, but had I chosen it would have been the pumpkin cheese, the watermelon, and the chocolate pear. So thank you for posting the recipe for the watermelon! And maybe I'll convince them to make me a judge next year so I can get a slice! :)

thanks, kiki. working with the cookie cutters was a pain, and it was a challenge to make the cheesecake squares seamless with the rest of the pie. i'm sure there's an easier way! next on the agenda: an mc escher pie-- the one where the birds turn into fish?

Your watermelon pie looks delicious. It's bringing back memories of a "friendly's watermelon roll" ice cream cake!

That asparagus pie is now a standard for me (and I do give credit whenever possible). The watermelon pie looks absolutely dreamy! What a beautiful presentation, and it looks so yummy.

Karol - great idea on the pumpkin checkerboard. Was it really as easy as you make it sound above?

we did it (AGAIN)! and i have to say, your watermelon pie was AMAZING. SO unexpected, SO refreshing, SO delicious. it was perfection.

as for my recipe, i didn't deviate too much from any standard pumpkin pie/cheesecake recipe you would find, but getting the checkerboard pattern even close to what i had imagined in my mind was near impossible. it ultimately involved using diamond cookie cutters (which i had to reshape into squares), baking them in, and then removing them halfway through.

dreams do come true!!
