I just discovered your blog and am completely enchanted by the concept, being a graduate student with a tight budget and living in Manhattan to boot. What fun that you are making coleslaw! That's just what I'm bringing to a Labor Day picnic today...I just wish that I had wasabi to try your recipe.

Best,
Ai Lu

P.S. Your cost calculations are AWESOME! Wow. I am so inspired. Now I can show these recipes to my husband and say: See? See? It's better for you to make your own bread and put together your own sandwich for lunch, instead of shelling out $6+ a pop. I don't know if he'll be as thrilled as I am, but I took your leave and have a loaf of Bittman's no-knead bread rising on my counter as I type...

I've been making variations of this lately. It started with a Mexican coleslaw with purple cabbage and carrots, lime-mustard-chili vinaigrette. I wrapped that in lettuce for Nick's last tea party (we missed you!).

I've had so much extra cabbage (those heads go FAR) so I've kept making it, improving every time I think. I'm now adding a good bit of adobo seasoning, which makes it kicky and just a tad salty.

Love this idea for a Japanese(-ish) approach!

Hmm, honey and wasabi, interesting - I wouldn't have thought of it, but I do love most sweet and spicy combinations so I'm sure I'd like this too. Thanks for the idea!

I've been out of town the past few weeks and haven't made it to the greenmarket in almost a month, I can't wait to see all those purple veggies.
