dear god that sounds like a fun trip! Thanks so much for sharing. If you ever need couscous advice, I'm here for you (or just grab a copy of any Claudia Roden cookbook, she's probably better at describing things)

Hi Sophie: Sure! I actually just took a regular bus to Essaouaria from Marrakesh rather than a tour bus. But there are several companies that will take you on a tour + transportation (you can probably just ask your hotel). The trip I took to the desert (in my earlier post) was through a travel company called Sahara Expedition, based in Marrakesh. In both cases these types of tours are typically filled with young backpackers, some alone and some not -- so I think it would be perfectly safe to travel alone. Have fun!

Haha, wouldn't the last paragraph be praise for cooking yourself? Or maybe I misunderstand the hostess...

hi there,
i'll be going to marrakesh in 3 weeks, and was planning a day trip to essaouira. would you recommend the tour you did? if so, can you please post the company's info? it sounds wonderful.
thanks! (would it be okay to go alone?)

Lovely post, and gorgeous pictures!

The best meal I had in Essaouira was when we met some locals and were invited for dinner - a huge seabass tagine! We went round the markets to buy all the ingredients, then I watched avidly as they put it all together in an utterly fabulous home-cooked feast.

Not eating out in Essaouira!
