Bully Hill has a silly named wine - Love My Goat. It's not the tastiest. But it is cheap and funny. There's also a great story behind it.

I love the wine trails.

For NY local wines, Dr. Constantin Frank is reliably good, and for cheap table wine, Bully Hill has a bunch for under $10. Both can often be found in NYC wine shops.

Hi Joyce: Absolutely! I should have mentioned that I bought a lovely bottle of Chardonnay from Chateau Lafayette Reneau (www.clrwine.com) after tasting it and liking it best (their "Barrell Fermented" one, for just $15). Good wines pretty much all around at Red Newt winery, mentioned in the post, though theirs were slightly more expensive -- and I enjoyed many wines at Lamoreaux Landing (also mentioned), including their award-winning Chardonnay which was only $13.

It is amazing how a change of scene can provide some perspective (and save you from the melancholia of the end of summer). What a great trip, and generally the food looked delish (loved the fish sandwich particularly!)

Hey, do you all know about Colin Beavan, http://noimpactman.typepad.com/, that NYC writer who's...well, I'll let him describe it: "For one year, my wife, my 2-year-old daughter, my dog and I, while living in the middle of New York City, are attempting to live without making any net impact on the environment. In other words, no trash, no carbon emissions, no toxins in the water, no elevators, no subway, no products in packaging, no plastics, no air conditioning, no TV, no toilets…"

OK, so I mention it because part of his deal is that he only consumes food and drink that was made/grown within something like a 150-mile radius of his Manhattan apartment. Ever since I started reading him blog, it's made me think about a lot of stuff, including where his booze comes from. And I see that you tried out some New York wineries. So over your Labor Day holiday did you find any nice, moderately priced and drinkable table wines that you would happily drink instead of Californian, French, Italian, Chilean or Australian red wines?

Aoife: agreed, although most of the time I'm not sure if I crave much about it beside its pricetag!

I had a similar experience, only at the Hudson Valley wineries. While 2 of them were lovely, the third served up dessert wine and hoo-boy did I not enjoy that. We wound up eating dinner at 4 because I could still taste the jam-like wine, and needed a good meal and beer to rid myself of the memory (thank you Terrapin in Rhinebeck).

Authentic and inauthentic Chinese foods are two entirely different animals, and while the latter all seems to blend together regardless of location, it turns out to be something of an asset, the way the uniformity of a limp McDonald's hamburger satisfies the same craving no matter where you are.
